Biographical Information[edit]

Kolbrin Vitek was a first-round pick in 2010.

Vitek was All-State as a high school senior, hitting .457, slugging .938 and going 7-1 with 84 K in 53 IP. He hit .305 as a freshman at Ball State and was 6-1 with a 5.65 ERA, striking out 69 in 65 1/3 IP. Collegiate Baseball named him a Freshman All-American.

Kolbrin hit .389 as a sophomore and was 4-3 with a 5.65 ERA, walking just 9 in 57 1/3 IP. He set the Ball State record for fewest walks per 9 innings. He was second in the Mid-American Conference in slugging (.736), led in doubles (25) and was second with 67 RBI. He also stole 17 bases, sixth in the MAC. He made All-MAC as a utility player.

As a junior, Vitek batted .361/.445/.691 with 17 homers, 16 steals, 73 runs and 68 RBI and had a 3.28 ERA while going 3-4 with three saves. He led the MAC in ERA and runs scored. He was named the MAC Player of the Year. Collegiate Baseball named him the All-American utility man.

The Boston Red Sox chose him 20th overall in the 2010 amateur draft; the pick was compensation for the loss of Billy Wagner to free agency. Scouted by Sam Ray, he quickly signed for $1.36 million and joined the Lowell Spinners, going 1-for-3 in his pro debut against the Vermont Lake Monsters on June 18th.
