Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Kevin Burford played in the minor leagues from 1997 to 2003. He was drafted twice -- first by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 6th round of the 1996 amateur draft and then by the San Diego Padres in the 15th round of the 1997 amateur draft.

He exploded onto the scene in 1997, hitting .389/.524/.575 with 12 stolen bases in 47 games for the AZL Padres. He led the Arizona League in average and RBI and was second to Choo Freeman in OBP. He also spent seven unsuccessful games with the Idaho Falls Braves and slashed .362/.490/.546 on the year as a whole. Never again would he replicate that success. Though he stole 15 bases in 1998, he also hit just .258/.358/.374 and struck out 125 times. In October 1998, he was the player to be named later in a deal that sent him to the Colorado Rockies and John Vander Wal to the Padres. He slashed .306/.447/.523 in 1999, but it was in short-season Low-A ball. 2000 was something of a renaissance, as he hit .292/.380/.499 with 16 home runs, 80 RBI, 40 doubles and 11 steals, but he slumped after that, never regaining his form. He finished his career in the Philadelphia Phillies system in 2004.
