Biographical Information[edit]
Indiana native Ken Richardson spent twenty-six active seasons in professional baseball as a player or manager between 1934 and 1981. Ken had two short trials in the Major Leagues, appearing with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1942 for six games and returned to the Big Leagues with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1946 for another six outings. Ken had combined totals in the 12 games of 35 at-bats with four base-hits, for a .114 career Major League batting average.
Richardson started out his professional career in 1934 as a nineteen- year-old with the Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League. He ended up his active minor league playing time as a 40-year-old with the El Paso Texans of the West Texas-New Mexico League in 1955. During this run Ken played, at one time or the other, every position on the field, with the exception of catcher and shortstop.
Ken's minor league statistical numbers are not totally complete but they do show that he appeared in 2,336 games with 7,691 at-bats and managed 2,168 base-hits, which included 222 home runs, for a career .282 batting average. Ken also had a 2-2 pitching record for the 1950 Riverside Rubes of the class C Sunset League while also appearing in 126 games as an infielder that season.
Richardson was a grip in the motion picture industry for 20 years and died from a heart attack, but had previously suffered from prostate cancer. His death occurred on December 7, 1987 at the Motion Picture Hospital in Woodland Hills, CA.
