Biographical Information[edit]

Keith Wenban pitched for the Australian national team.

Wenban was with Australia for the 1985 Asian Championship and 1985 Intercontinental Cup. [1] When the Australian Baseball League formed in 1989-1990, he went 3-6 with a 4.72 ERA for the Brisbane Bandits. [2] He was 2-4 with a 5.06 ERA for the Perth Heat in 1990-1991 and saw limited action as Perth won the title. [3]

He got the start against Japan in the 1991 Asian Championship and kept it even at 6-6 after five innings before Brett Cederblad relieved. Australia would win, handing Japan its lone loss of the tournament. [4] He had a 2-1, 3.46 record for Perth in 1991-1992 and 0-2, 7.84 in 1992-1993. [5]

In 1993-1994, the 29-year-old was 1-3 but with a 2.03 ERA for the Canberra Bushrangers for his best ABL campaign. He had an ERA .42 better than leader Brad Cornett but fell just short of qualifying (44 1/3 IP; Kim Jessop qualified with 51 2/3 so he was within one start of making it). [6]

The right-hander fell to 2-10, 6.42 for Canberra in 1994-1995. He tied for third in the league with 16 starts. [7] He was 5-3 with a 6.18 ERA for the Gold Coast Cougars in 1995-1996. His career ended in 1996-1997, allowing four runs in 2/3 IP. [8]

In his ABL career, he had gone 15-29 with a 5.22 ERA in 81 games (55 starts), striking out 197 in 319 IP. [9] In the ABL's initial ten-year run, he was 14th in IP, 5th in losses, 12th in hits allowed (378, between Simon Sheldon-Collins and Simon Eissens), 7th in runs allowed (253), 12th in earned runs (185), 16th in K (between Graeme Lloyd and Jessop), tied for 7th in walks (128), 20th in homers allowed (37), 9th in starts (between Earl Byrne and Jessop) and tied Cornett for 15th in complete games (9).
