Biographical Information[edit]
Karan Patel was among the first players of Indian descent to be drafted by a Major League Baseball team when he was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 7th round of the 2019 Amateur Draft (at a minimum, Ranbir Grewal had preceded him in 1990 and Jasvir Rakkar in 2012). He began his professional career with the Great Falls Voyagers of the Pioneer League in 2019 and put up a 3 and 3 win-to-loss record on the mound for them with an earned run average of 3.90. He did not play in 2020 due to the minor league season getting canceled as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Once minor league ball returned in 2021, Patel played for three different teams, first starting the year on a rehabilitation assignment in July with the ACL White Sox where he got lit up by opponents, acquiring a 21.60 ERA over 1.2 innings of work in just two appearances. He then moved up to the Class-A Kannapolis Cannon Ballers where he went 0-2, with a 4.96 ERA in 10 games. He then finished the season with the High-A Winston-Salem Dash again going 0-2 with a 5.28 ERA.
Patel began the 2022 season with Winston-Salem again where he went 3-5, 4.58 in 37 games. He was promoted to the Double-A Birmingham Barons but seemed shaky on the mound, allowing 3 walks and 2 earned runs in 1 1/3 innings of work in his only game with the club.
The White Sox handed him his release at the end of spring training in 2023, and Patel signed with the Billings Mustangs of the independent Pioneer League, going 4-5, 5.11 in 16 games. In 2024 he joined the Lincoln Saltdogs of the American Association.
In addition to baseball, he played for the U.S. national cricket team.
