Biographical Information[edit]

Kai-Wen Cheng has played in the CPBL.

Cheng represented Taiwan in the 2015 Universiade. The Uni-President Lions drafted him in the third round of the 2015 CPBL Draft, and he soon became a regular starting outfielder in 2016. Coincidentally, he debuted against Kai-Wen Cheng of the CTBC Brothers, and he hit a single. Cheng set the CPBL record by hitting 24 homers in his first season, but he also broke the record with his 119 strikeouts. He ranked 6th in homers (10 behind Kuo-Hui Kao) and 10th in doubles (18 behind Po-Jung Wang and Hung-Yu Lin). Cheng pinch-hit for Fu-Hao Liu in the 6th inning of the 2016 CPBL All-Star Game, and he blasted a solo shot off Mike Loree. He won 58 votes for the CPBL Rookie of the Year Award, ranking 2nd behind Po-Jung Wang, who set even more records.[1]

The Hualien native was selected into the 2017 CPBL All-Star Game, and he was 0-for-2. His batting line fell to .167/.282/.525 in 2017, but he still crushed 8 homers. Cheng bounced back and hit .229/.314/.441 with 10 homers in 2018. In the 2018 Taiwan Series, Cheng was 1-for-7 with a double against Yi-Cheng Wang in Game 4, and the Lamigo Monkeys beat the Lions in 5 games. Cheng slumped to .190/.250/.397 in 2019, and he lost his spot due to his low batting average and high K%. He never played more than 35 games from 2019 to 2023, and the Lions released him after the 2023 season.[2] The Wei-Chuan Dragons then picked him up.
