Biographical Information

Justin Maxwell was drafted by the Washington Nationals in 4th round pick in the 2005 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Alex Smith and made his pro debut the next summer.

On March 31, 2013, he became the sixth player to hit two triples on Opening Day; it was the Houston Astros' first game as an American League team and his two long hits paved the way to an 8-2 win over the Texas Rangers. He was hitting .237 after 19 games as Houston's regular centerfielder when he was hit by a pitch by Hisashi Iwakuma of the Seattle Mariners in the 3rd inning on April 23rd. He suffered a fracture in his left hand and was immediately placed on the disabled list. He returned on June 18th, but a week later, on June 25th, he suffered a concussion when he banged his head against the turf diving for a ball in a game against the St. Louis Cardinals. He came back on July 13th, but the injuries meant that he had lost his starting job in Houston, the team having a number of younger outfielders available. He was hitting .241 with 2 homers and 8 RBI in 40 games when he was traded to the Kansas City Royals on July 31st, in return for minor league P Kyle Smith. On September 22nd, he was the hero in a key game for the Royals, who were battling for a wild card spot at that late stage of the season: batting in the 10th inning of a scoreless tie with the Texas Rangers with two outs and a full count, he sent a pitch by Joakim Soria over the fence at Kauffman Stadium for a walk-off grand slam.
