Biographical Information[edit]

Junior Vizcaino reached AA as a player then became a scout. His son Vance Vizcaino was drafted in 2012.

Vizcaino was taken by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 11th round of the January 1985 draft out of junior college. The Pittsburgh Pirates chose him in the 14th round of the 1987 amateur draft. He had a nice pro debut with the Watertown Pirates, hitting .306/.388/.472 that summer, with 33 runs and 33 RBI in 51 games. He was third on the team in average behind Steve Carter and Scott Barczi, ahead of future major leaguers Moises Alou and Wes Chamberlain.

With the 1988 Salem Buccaneers, Junior batted .261/.310/.408 with 11 HR and 58 RBI in 89 games, stealing 20 bases in 27 tries. He did make 18 errors at first base, though. He led the team in RBI, tied Tony Longmire and Chamberlain for the most homers and was second to Julio Peguero in steals. In 1989, the San Pedro de Macoris native split time between Salem (.251/.335/.380 in 100 G, 14 SB, 3 CS) and the Harrisburg Senators (.158/.210/.211 in 17 G, 21 K, 0 HR in 62 AB). He concluded his playing career with Harrisburg in 1990, again doing poorly there, hitting .254/.337/.297 with 73 whiffs and no homers in 236 AB.

Overall, Vizcaino had batted .259/.331/.377 in 341 minor league games, with 161 runs, 156 RBI, 22 home runs and 47 steals in 62 tries. He struck out in 338 of 1,148 at-bats and fielded .980 at 1B.

Vizcaino was a scout for the Atlanta Braves from 1994-2000 then moved to the Kansas City Royals. In 2007, he was promoted to national scouting supervisor for the Royals. As an area scout, he had signed Devon Lowery. In 2017, the Pirates brought him back, this time as the Director of International Scouting.
