Biographical Information[edit]
Submariner Jeong-kil Ma pitched in the Korea Baseball Organization for 13 years.
Ma was drafted by the Hanwha Eagles in the 10th round of the 1998 KBO draft, and he decided to go to college first. He represented South Korea in the 2001 Asian Championship, and he joined the Eagles in 2002. Ma pitched 59 games as a rookie, and he notched 6 holds and 6 saves with a 5.40 ERA. He was 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA in the 2002 Intercontinental Cup, striking out 18 in 10 1/3 IP. He beat Gerardo Hernandez and Mexico. He finished 5th in the Cup in K despite being third on his team as he trailed Tae-hyon Chong, Jose Ibar, Roger Deago and Ki-pyo Kim. He then collected 8 holds with a 4.06 ERA in 63 games in 2003, and his ERA rose to 4.83 in 33 games with 2 saves in 2004. Ma missed the next two seasons due to military service, and he had a 4.50 ERA in 11 games in 2007 after returning.
The Cheongju native had his career year in 2008, and he collected 7 holds with a 2.91 ERA in 64 games. He pitched 92 2/3 innings as a reliever, and he was 3rd in appearances (tied with Young-sik Kang). Ma slumped to a 4.97 ERA in 54 games in 2009, then the Eagles traded him to the Nexen Heroes for Il-young Ma. He had a 3.04 ERA in 58 games in 2010, then he notched 8 holds with a 3.35 ERA in 41 games in 2011. However, Ma suffered a left knee injury on August 8, and he missed the rest of the season and the entire 2012 season. He came back in 2013, and his ERA was 4.09 in 29 games. Ma collected 7 holds with a 4.78 ERA in 56 games in 2014, then he slumped to a 5.06 ERA in 35 games in 2015. He bounced back in 2016 as he notched 12 holds with a 4.10 ERA in 61 games, but he allowed 12 runs in 10 1/3 innings in 2017 then he retired. Ma was the bullpen coach of the Heroes from 2017 to 2020 and from 2023 to 2024.
Overall, Ma was 26-21 with a 4.25 ERA, collected 60 holds and 14 saves in 575 games, struck out 528 and pitched 638 innings in 13 seasons in the KBO.
