Biographical Information[edit]

First baseman Joe Mahoney reached the majors with the Baltimore Orioles in 2012.

Mahoney hit .559 as a high school senior at Catholic Central High School in Troy, NY, winning All-State honors. While with the University of Richmond in 2005, he hit .268/.315/.429 with nine home runs and 41 RBI. He led Atlantic-10 Conference freshmen in dingers. In 2006, he hit .356/.416/.495 with five home runs and 49 RBI in 54 games. He was second-team A-10. As a junior in 2007 - his final year with the school - he hit .305/.429/.493 with 17 home runs, 62 RBI and 16 stolen bases in 19 tries. He tied for the A-10 lead in home runs. Mahoney was drafted by the Orioles in the sixth round of the 2007 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Dean Albany and began his professional career that season.

With the Aberdeen IronBirds in 2007, Mahoney hit .269/.330/.438 with nine home runs and 44 RBI in 65 games. The following year, with the Delmarva Shorebirds, Mahoney hit .222/.275/.349 with seven home runs and 61 RBI in 95 games. He fanned in 96 of 352 at-bats. In 2009, Mahoney played for the Shorebirds and Frederick Keys, hitting a combined .278/.326/.414 with eight home runs, 58 RBI and 29 stolen bases in 31 tries despite weighing over 250 pounds. He played for the Keys and Bowie Baysox in 2010, hitting .307/.366/.498 with 18 home runs, 78 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 17 attempts to earn a spot on Baltimore's 40-man roster for the first time. In 2011, he played 85 games at Bowie and 3 at Frederick, missing time with injuries. He hit a combined .294/.354/.508, with 26 doubles and 11 homers.

Mahoney started 2012 with the Norfolk Tides of the International League, getting his first taste of AAA ball. After hitting .256/.312/.355 in 85 games, he was called up to the majors in early July, replacing Chris Tillman on the roster. He made his big league debut on July 7th, hitting 8th and playing first base. He flew out against Jered Weaver in his first at-bat then ground out and flew out, also against Weaver.
