Joseph Fugere
Joseph Henry Fugere
- Born February 28, 1940 in Providence, RI USA
- Died August 14, 2014 in Gainesville, GA USA
Biographical Information[edit]
Joseph Fugere had one of the briefest major league umpiring careers in history, as he worked only half a game as a National League umpire in 1998. On Opening Day that year, April 3rd, a scheduling mix-up meant that of the crew of four umpires assigned to work the game between the San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium, only Eric Gregg showed up on time. In order to get the game going, he worked home plate, while three local amateur amateurs umpires were rounded out to complete the crew. Fugere was assigned to third base while Dennis Duncan was at first base and William Buchanan at second. In the 4th inning, the three other regular umpires were ready to step in, and the three amateurs gave way to them for the remainder of the game.
