Biographical Information

Infielder Jose Marzan was taken in the 16th round of the 1987 amateur draft by the Minnesota Twins. In college, he had set the career Florida State University record for steals (98), broken 19 years later by Shane Robinson. Jose had gone 39 for 45 in steals in 73 games in his last year in college; one of his speedy teammates in school was Deion Sanders. He tied Ed Alicea and Ty Griffin for 19th in NCAA Division I in steals that year.

He played in the Twins system from 1987 to 1991. Marzan began his professional career with the Kenosha Twins, hitting .255/~.367/.343 and only stealing one base in 32 games while serving as a backup first baseman. In 1988, Jose spent most of the year in the same role, batting .267/~.319/.378 and stealing only one base in three tries. He also appeared with the Visalia Oaks and hit .267/~.343/.300. In 1989, Marzan had his best season as a professional player. He hit .259/~.346/.346 with nine steals and 71 RBI as the starting first baseman for Visalia.

Marzan finished his playing career with two years on the Orlando Twins. He batted .230/~.353/.270 in '90 (with 2 SB in 6 tries as the speed he showed in college never manifested itself in the minors) and .262/~.342/.362 at age 25 in his second year at AA.

Marzan began his post playing career as a coach for the GCL Twins in 1992. He also coached for the Fort Myers Miracle in 1995 and has been the Minnesota Twins' Latin American coordinator since 2005. He returned stateside as coach of the GCL Twins again in 2017.
