Biographical Information[edit]

Jose Angel Mejias has pitched in Venezuela, the US, Mexico, Colombia and Italy.

Mejias was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies in November 2002. With Mariara in 2003, he was 2-0 with a save, 2.45 ERA, .170 opponent average and 29 strikeouts in 25 2/3 IP. The next year, he had a 5-4, 2.40 record for Tronconero 1. He split 2005 between the GCL Phillies (0-3, 3 Sv, 3.32 in 15 G) and Clearwater Threshers (2 R in 2 IP). He did not play in 2006. In 2006-2007, he allowed one run in one inning for the Leones del Caracas in his Venezuelan Winter League debut.

He returned to the US in 2007 with the VSL Mets, going 4-5 with two saves and a 3.20 ERA and only walking 12 in 56 1/3 IP. He tied for 6th in the Venezuelan Summer League in losses. The Tampa Bay Rays took him in the AAA portion of the 2007 Rule V Draft. He was 3-2 with two saves and a 4.73 ERA in 34 games for the Columbus Catfish the following summer. In the winter, he won his only outing for Caracas, with a 3.18 ERA.

Mejias split 2009 between the Charlotte Stone Crabs (1-2, Sv, 6.41 in 19 G) and Montgomery Biscuits (0 R in 4 1/3 IP). In 2010, he was in the Liga Norte de Sonora. In 2011, he played in the Liga Paralela and with the Tigres de Cartagena of the Colombian League (1-3, 7.71). For 2012, he signed with Godo of the Italian Baseball League; he went 2-4 with 3 saves and a 5.54 ERA in 13 games.

He was 0-1 with a 2.00 ERA in three games for Caracas in 2012-2013, his first Venezuelan Winter League appearances in four years. For Godo again in 2013, he struggled (8 H, 1 BB, 5 R in 5 1/3 IP). Mejias was on the Venezuelan national team in the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games, allowing five hits, four walks but only two runs in 5 1/3 IP in a start before Delio Martinez relieved; Venezuela beat Panama 4-3 that day.
