Biographical Information[edit]
José Pérez was a 1B/OF for the Venezuelan national team.
He hit .386/.489/.614 in the 1940 Amateur World Series, tying Lou Athanas for 5th in the event in average and leading with three triples. His four doubles tied Juan Vallecillo for the lead and his 17 hits were two shy of leader Stanley Cayasso. [1] In the 1941 Amateur World Series, he helped Venezuela win their first Amateur World Series. He hit .275 and scored 11 runs, three shy of leader Tony Ordeñana. [2] He died in a plane crash shortly after turning 30. One of his teammates, Luis Romero, outlived him by 73 years. [3] Estadio José Pérez Colmenarez was named in his honor. The 1941 team was named the Héroes del 41 and was inducted en masse into the Venezuelan Baseball Hall of Fame. [4]
