Biographical Information[edit]
José Alberro was signed by the Texas Rangers as an amateur free agent in 1991. He started with the GCL Rangers of the Gulf Coast League, going 2-0 with 6 saves and a 1.48 ERA in 19 games. He was promoted to Class A Charlotte of the Florida State League, going 0-1 with a 9.53 ERA in 5 games. In 1992, he went 1-1 with 15 saves and a 1.20 ERA in 28 games before moving to the A ball Gastonia Rangers of the South Atlantic League, where he finished the year 1-0 with a save and a 3.48 ERA in 17 games. The 1993 season saw Alberro move up to the AA Tulsa Drillers, where he went 0-0 with 5 saves and a 0.95 ERA in 17 games before being promoted to the AAA Oklahoma City 89ers where he finished with a 6.88 ERA in 12 games. He pitched six scoreless innings for the Navegantes del Magallanes in the 1994 Caribbean Series.
Alberro opened the 1994 season with the 89ers, and went 4-3 with 11 saves and a 4.52 ERA in 52 games. On a dominant Senadores de San Juan team that winter, he allowed no runs in four appearances in the 1995 Caribbean Series to help them to a title. In 1995, Alberro went 4-2 with a 3.36 ERA in 20 games (10 starts) and earned a promotion to the bigs, posting a 7.40 ERA in 12 games. In 1996, Alberro went 9-9 with a 3.47 ERA in 29 games with 4 complete games in the minors, earning another promotion to Texas. He went 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA in 5 games for the Rangers. Alberro returned to the 89ers in 1997, and went 5-6 with a 4.22 ERA in 16 games before his final big league promotion, finishing 0-3 with a 7.94 ERA in 10 games.
The New York Yankees claimed him off waivers from Texas on August 11, 1997 and he pitched one game for the AAA Columbus Clippers going 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA. He opened the 1998 season with the Clippers and went 8-10 with a 4.53 ERA in 46 games. In 1999, Alberro started out with Detroit Tigers, going 0-0 with a 3.38 ERA in one game with the Jacksonville Suns of the Southern League before a promotion to the AAA Toledo Mud Hens, finishing 2-2 with a 5.25 ERA in 14 games. He finished his Organized Baseball career in 1999 with the Florida Marlins organization and the AAA Calgary Cannons, going 3-2 with a 6.64 ERA in 24 games. He later saved two games for the Puerto Rican national team in the 2005 Baseball World Cup but allowed 4 runs (3 earned) in 3 innings.
