Jorge Merán spent 10 seasons in the minor leagues, part of two in AAA.
Merán debuted in 1994 with the DSL Tigers, hitting .236 with 3 home runs and 43 RBI. He batted .270 with 6 homers and 41 RBI for the same club in '95. He came stateside in 1996 with the GCL Tigers, batting .315/.378/.464 to finish sixth in the Gulf Coast League in average. He lost out All-Star honors at C to Donny Leon, the league average and RBI leader.
Jorge struggled big-time with the 1997 Jamestown Jammers, hitting just .175/.221/.301. He did lead New York-Penn League catchers with 55 assists, though. In '98, Merán split time between Jamestown (.273/.370/.464) and the Lakeland Tigers (4 for 20, 3 2B). During the 1999 campaign, the 24/25-year-old hit .197/.235/.349 for the West Michigan Whitecaps with half of his 30 hits going for extra bases, backing up Brandon Inge at catcher.
In 2000, Merán batted .268/.299/.433 in 63 games for Lakeland and was 2 for 13 with the Jacksonville Suns. During the next year, he hit .265/.310/.376 in 35 games for the Erie SeaWolves and went 4 for 21 with two walks for the Toledo Mud Hens in his AAA debut.
Jorge ended his run with the Tigers organization in 2002, batting .250/.315/.391 in 56 games for Erie (splitting catching with Max St. Pierre) and going 2 for 12 with Toledo. In 2003, he batted .225/?/.369 for the Atlantic City Surf.
Merán was 3 for 8 for the Dominican national team in the 2007 Pan American Games, getting all of his hits in a win over Brazil. He made a run-scoring error in the 2-0 Dominican loss to the underdog Nicaragan squad.
In 2011, he was appointed by Major League Baseball as one of four team managers for El Torneo Supremo.
