Biographical Information[edit]
Jordyn Adams was drafted 17th overall by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 2018 amateur draft. One of the best pure athletes in the draft, Adams was a star wide receiver in high school, first at Blythewood High School and later at Green Hope High School for his senior year, in addition to his play as a star outfielder. He was slated to attend the University of North Carolina, where his father was an assistant coach, on a football scholarship. He was thus considered a tough sign for the Angels, but instead was the first player from the draft to sign a contract, doing so on June 5th, a day after his selection, and foregoing his potential football career in the process. Chris McAlpin was the signing scout. He was also a basketball star, with an impressive ability to dunk in spite of his small size (by NBA standards). He is known for his outstanding speed, graded a perfect 80 on the major league baseball scouting system.
It took him a while to reach the majors, and he was in fact one of the last draftees from the first round of the 2018 draft to make it to the Show. He had been badly hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic, as he was doing well before that, hitting .257 in 109 games between two levels in 2019, but then falling to .217/.290/.311 in 71 games for the Tri-City Dust Devils of the High-A West in 2021 after having been forced to sit out a full year. He only improved slightly in 2022, to .238/.317/.332 in 120 games between Class A and AA in 2022. Still, the Angels did not give up on him and promoted him to the AAA Salt Lake Bees of the Pacific Coast League at the start of 2023. He rewarded their confidence with his best season yet as a pro, batting ..264/.351/.466 in 89 games as an outfielder through the end of July. Going through a rash of injuries, the Angels called him up on August 2nd and he made his debut against the Atlanta Braves, going 0 for 4 as the starting centerfielder in a 12-5 loss.
