Biographical Information[edit]

Jong-kyeom Yoo was a pitcher in the first nine seasons of the Korea Baseball Organization.

Yoo was on the South Korean national team that won the 1977 Intercontinental Cup. He debuted with the MBC Blue Dragons in the 1982 KBO; he was 6-5 with 3 saves and a 3.25 ERA in the league's inaugural year. He was 10th in ERA and tied Yong-nam Kim for 7th in strikeouts (85). In 1983, he went 8-7 with five saves and a 2.40 ERA. He was third in ERA (.07 behind leader and teammate Ki-ryong Ha and .06 behind Japanese hurler Hisao Niura) and 9th in strikeouts (74). MBC went to the 1983 Korean Series but lost to the Haitai Tigers, Yoo taking the defeat in game two. In 1984, the 27-year-old fell to 8-10, 3.53 with four saves. He tied Niura for 9th in the league in losses and tied for 7th in games pitched (38).

The Seoul native was 10-8 with a save and a 2.99 ERA in 1985, tying for 10th in the loop in victories. In 1986, he had another good year at 10-7, 3.03. He tied Jung-soo Kim for third in the league in games pitched (41). He had his best ERA in 1987 (7-5, 2.24) but did not get enough innings to qualify. He fell to 4-7, 4.13 with a save in 1988 then was 3-6 with a save and a 3.44 ERA in 1989. The team became the LG Twins in 1990 and Yoo was 1-2 with a 5.96 ERA in 21 games. The club won the 1990 Korean Series. Retiring as a player, Yoo then coached for LG when they won the 1994 Korean Series.

Overall, Yoo had gone 57-57 with 15 saves and a 3.20 ERA in 269 KBO games. In 1,039 1/3 innings, he allowed 937 hits and struck out 497.
