Biographical Information[edit]
Jong-gil Shin played in the KBO for 11 years.
Shin was drafted by the Lotte Giants in the 6th round of the 2000 KBO draft, and he hit .284/.351/.403 in 40 games in his first season. He was selected by the Hanwha Eagles as the compensation of free agent Sang-mok Lee, and he hit .224/.266/.374 in 49 games in 2004. He hit for a cycle on September 24, 2004, and he was the youngest player to hit for a cycle in KBO history. Shin missed the next three seasons due to military service, and he was traded to the KIA Tigers for Dong-woo Kang after staying in the minors for the entire 2008 season. He only played 16 games with the big club in 2009, and he went 4-for-17.
The Jangseong native improved to .321/.360/.435 with 16 steals in 2010, then his batting line fell to .221/.299/.324 with 23 steals in 2011. Shin struggled again in 2012, and he hit .157/.202/.265 in 44 games. Shin bounced back in 2013, and he had a solid .310/.365/.427 batting line with a career-high 29 steals. He was 6th in steals (tied with Taek-keun Lee) and 7th in triples (3 behind Soo-bin Jung and Ji-hwan Oh). Shin hit .292/.345/.467 with 20 steals and 6 triples (8th in the league, tied with Jae-won Oh and Eric Thames) in 2014, then he had a .262/.329/.377 batting line in 2015. Shin missed half of the 2016 season due to knee injury, and he batted .310/.385/.390 in 75 games. He slumped to .241/.278/.361 in 2017, and he announced his retirement after staying in the minors for the entire 2018 season. He then coached Ulsan Technical High School in 2020.
Overall, Shin hit .273/.333/.395 with 554 hits and 28 homers in 11 seasons in the KBO.
