The Joliet JackHammers began play in the Northern League in 2002. Matt Nokes managed the team for its first two years, and former big league skipper Hal Lanier became the team's manager for the 2006 season. Wally Backman followed him in 2008.

After the 2010 season, the team became the Joliet Slammers and shifted to the Frontier League.

Pete Rose, Jr. played for them.
