Biographical Information

Poor John Wood pitched in one game for the St. Louis Browns in 1896, but never got an out. He faced four batters, giving up one hit, two walks, and he hit one batter. The database does not show that he ever pitched in the minors, although the Sporting Life issue mentioned below says that he was loaned out to the Columbus, OH team after his one big league appearance.

John pitched his game a few days before his 24th birthday. He was much younger than his teammate Roger Connor, who was 38 that year. The pitching staff for the team had an overall ERA of 5.33, so it's surprising that they didn't give Wood another pitching opportunity. Dewey McDougal, who had an ERA of 8.10, got into three games, and Bill Kissinger, with an ERA of 6.49, was in 20 games.
