Biographical Information[edit]
John Schultz set his college's records in several categories.
Schultz hit .518 as a sophomore in high school and .457 as a senior. He was All-State as a senior. The outfielder hit .309/.425/.372 as a freshman in college, then .319/.400/.468 with 44 runs in 46 games as a sophomore; both seasons, he played error-free defense. That season, he was second on Pitt in runs behind All-American Chris Sedon. As a junior in 2010, John set Pitt's single-season records for both runs (76) and walks (56). He had a .404/.521/.556 batting line with 20 doubles in 56 games, averaging a walk per game as well as over a hit and a half. Schultz was 4th in the Big East Conference in average but failed to make the All-Conference outfield first team, finishing second team behind Jeremy Baltz, Matt Szczur and Pat Biserta. He was second on his team in average behind Joe Leonard. He was 52nd in NCAA Division I in average, tied for 13th in runs, 18th in OBP and tied for 15th in walks.
During his senior year, Schultz fell to .341/.455/.486 with 47 runs in 56 games; he had 10 outfield assists. He was again second-team All-Conference. He finished as Pitt's career leader in walks (142), runs (184) and doubles (53). The Florida Marlins took him in the 34th round of the 2011 amateur draft; he was one of six Panthers taken, tying a school record set in 1996. The others chosen were Kevan Smith, Ray Black, David Chester, Travis Whitmore and Corey Baker.
Schultz made his pro debut with the GCL Marlins on June 20, going 2 for 3 with a triple, walk and two runs against the GCL Astros.
