Biographical Information[edit]
Ray Black was drafted in 2011 and reached the majors in 2018.
In his senior year of high school, Black needed to undergo Tommy John Surgery. He was 0-3 with a save and a 16.74 ERA as a college sophomore in 2010 (he was redshirted in 2009). He allowed 28 hits and 15 walks in 16 2/3 innings and had Pitt's highest ERA by almost five runs. As a junior in 2011, Ray was 1-1 with 4 saves, a 6.30 ERA, 26 walks and 33 strikeouts in 20 innings. Despite his lofty ERA and walk totals, the reliever was picked by the San Francisco Giants in the 7th round of the 2011 amateur draft. The team was impressed by his fastball, which hit the upper 90s on the radar gun. He signed for a $225,000 bonus, the last of Pitt's six 2011 draftees to sign. After parts of two seasons by the bay (6.04 ERA yet an 11/38 BB/K ratio in 25 1/3 innings), Ray was packaged with Drew Pomeranz to the Milwaukee Brewers at the 2019 trading deadline for infield prospect Mauricio Dubon.
