Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher John Schreiber, a native of Michigan, made his major league debut with his hometown team, the Detroit Tigers, in August of 2019 after having been a 15th round pick in the 2016 amateur draft out of the University of Northwestern Ohio. He also pitched for the Bengals in 2020, both years exclusively in relief, but the results were mediocre: he was 2-0, 6.23 in 13 games in his rookie season, and 0-1, 6.32 during the pandemic season. Still, he put up an excellent K/W ratio of 33/8 in 28 2/3 innings over the two seasons.
On February 18, 2021, he was picked up off waivers by the Boston Red Sox but only appeared in one game in the big leagues that season, pitching 3 innings. In 2022, he was a valuable member of the team's bullpen, however, appearing in 64 games with a record of 4-4, 2.22 and 8 saves. In 65 innings, he gave up just 45 hits and struck out 74 batters while walking 19. At one point, he had a streak of 19 consecutive appearances without giving up a run. He wasn't able to repeat that success in 2023, finishing at 2-1, 3.86 in 46 games. He made his first two career major league starts that year, both times as an opener in a bullpen game and was hampered by a high walk rate - 25 in 46 2/3 innings, and was sent down to the minors for rehabilitation purposes after missing two months with a right lat strain.. It was in fact the third straight year in which he had pitched for the AAA Worcester Red Sox, after 33 games as a swingman in 2021, and 7 games in relief at the start of 2022. In 2023, he had 4 games in AAA and a couple more in AA with the Portland Sea Dogs. His ERA was at 2.12 before the injury, but he did not pitch as well after returning to Boston.
On February 17, 2024, with spring training getting under way, he was traded to the Kansas City Royals in return for minor leaguer David Sandlin, where he was expected to be a key member of the bullpen.
