Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher John Orton was signed as a 1st round pick in the 1987 amateur draft by the California Angels and scout Kevin Malone. He had played for Team USA in the 1986 Amateur World Series, splitting catching with Scott Servais and Ed Fulton.

Orton caught shutouts in his first two big league games: on August 20, 1989, Kirk McCaskill blanked the Cleveland Indians and on August 24th, Bert Blyleven shut down the Kansas City Royals.

After his playing career ended, Orton was a coach for the Lake Elsinore Storm in 1999-2000 and spent five years as a minor league manager in the Chicago White Sox organization. In 2011 and 2012 was the team's minor league catching coordinator.
