Biographical Information[edit]

John Murphy pitched for the Altoona Mountain City and the Wilmington Quicksteps in the 1884 Union Association. He went 0-6 for Wilmington, pitching 48 innings, then made somewhat of a turn-around with Altoona going 5-6 in 111 innings, to give him a 5-12 record while appearing in 21 total games for a 3.61 ERA.

Murphy also played considerably in the field, having an overall .810 fielding percentage in 40 games. He also had 125 at-bats with 16 base hits for a .118 average.

In 1886 John appeared with the Jersey City Jerseys in the Eastern League and also with the Scranton Miners in the Pennsylvania State Association; no records are currently available. In 1887, he was with the Altoona, PA team, this time in the Pennsylvania State Association; again no records are currently available for this run.

Murphy seemingly gave up the sport, going to Philadelphia, PA where he worked as a shoemaker until his death on March 7, 1905. His obituary mentioned he was a member of the Southwark Quoit Club.
