John Mulligan

Biographical Information[edit]
Third baseman John Mulligan played one game for the Washington Nationals of the Union Association in 1884. That team is infamous for having a number of players for which little or no biographical information is known.
He is traditionally listed as being from Philadelphia, PA, but the basis for that, or for giving him the first name "John", is tenuous. There is a possibility that the player may have been Edward Joseph Mulligan, who was part of the Georgetown University team in 1882 and 1883 and therefore would have been known to a Washington-based team. He was apparently seeking employment in baseball around Philadelphia in June of 1884; however he was a catcher and not a third baseman. That identification is little more than a guess for now.
