Biographical Information[edit]
John McAninch played for Team USA and in the minors.
McAninch was the US's main DH in the 1994 Baseball World Cup and backed up A.J. Hinch at catcher. He hit .294/.368/.647 with five runs and five RBI in six games, throwing out the only runner who tried to steal on him. He went deep off Puerto Rico's Wilfredo Vélez and Sweden's Peter Schöön. The California Angels took him in the 30th round of the 1995 amateur draft, one pick before Dusty Allen and two before Juan Pierre.
As a C/1B for the '95 Boise Hawks, he batted .250/.328/.384. He moved up to the Cedar Rapids Kernels in 1996 and produced at a .248/.307/.409 clip with 10 homers in 86 games, mostly at DH. With the 1997 Lake Elsinore Storm, he remained steady at .250/.319/.388. Going to the independent leagues, he hit .277/.336/.404 for the Bayou Bullfrogs, playing primarily first base.
He had hit .259/.322/.400 in 267 games as a pro, with 56 doubles, 22 homers and 129 runs.
