Biographical Information[edit]
John Love played four seasons in the minors.
Love was the NCAA Division II All-American at 2B in 1985. He made his pro debut with the independent Idaho Falls Nuggets that summer, hitting .307/.363/.394 in a hitter's league and fielding .887 at SS. Signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates, he spent most of 1986 with the Macon Pirates (.291/.356/.390 in 55 G) and also was 5 for 12 with a walk for the GCL Pirates.
Starting at 3B for Macon in 1987, he batted .313/.373/.462 with 29 doubles, 14 homers, 76 runs and 91 RBI while fielding .906 with 34 errors at the hot corner. He was second in the South Atlantic League in average (.010 behind Ed Whited), 4th in slugging, 3rd in doubles (behind Whited and Pedro Sanchez), led in hits (one ahead of Phil Clark and was 4th in RBI. Among Pirates minor leaguers, he tied Tom Dunbar for 9th in runs, tied Dimas Gutierrez for 4th in doubles, was 3rd in hits (behind Tommy Gregg and Tony Chance), ranked 8th in home runs, was 4th in RBI (between Lance Belen and Gregg) and was 5th in average. He was named the SAL All-Star DH.
He ended his career with the 1988 Salem Buccaneers (.283/.345/.387 in 59 G) and Augusta Pirates (.257/.296/.377 in 49 G). He had hit .297/.356/.415 with 205 RBI and 185 runs in 375 games as a pro, fielding .897 in 232 games at 3B, his main position.
