Biographical Information[edit]

On June 5, 2024, catcher John Garcia accomplished something previously unseen in baseball history as he hit five doubles in leading the Asheville Tourists of the South Atlantic League to an 18-8 win over the Bowling Green Hot Rods. The major league record for doubles in a game is four, accomplished by some fifty players, while there is no record of anyone else hitting five in a minor league games, although complete game records only exist since 2005.

Garcia was born in the Dominican Republic but grew up in Bronx, NY where his favorite sport was basketball. It was only when he was in high school that he took up baseball at the urging of friends, and he moved on to Monroe Community College and then to Grambling State University thanks to his ability. He was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 19th round of the 2022 amateur draft after hitting .409 in 55 games in his final college season. He hit only .089 in 18 games between the FCL Astros Blue and the Fayetteville Woodpeckers in his first pro season. In 2023, he was with Fayetteville and Asheville, combining to hit .223/.364/.324 in 97 games. He actually hit better with Asheville, even though it has a higher classification than Fayetteville. He started the 2024 season at Asheville and was hitting better than he ever had so far even before his historic game, the result of, in his words, adopting a more aggressive approach at the plate.
