Johan Brandsma

From BR Bullpen

Johan Brandsma made his Hoofdklasse umpiring debut in 1993. He has worked the 2009 World Youth Championship and 2010 World Junior Championship on the international stage. In the 2010 Holland Series, he was involved in two unusual plays in one inning of the finale, game six. In the second inning, Amsterdam Pirates RF Bas de Jong was on second and Kenny Berkenbosch was on first when Rashid Gerard singled. De Jong collided with third base coach Randell Hannah while rounding third. Meanwhile, Berkenbosch was headed for third when Neptunus CF Shaldimar Daantji bobbled the ball. De Jong got back to his feet and came home. Neptunus manager Steve Janssen wanted the play to be ruled coach's interference but Brandsma ruled correctly that it was not as the contact was unintentional and not intended to aid the runner. Fellow veteran umpire Fred van Groningen Schinkel said he had never seen a play like that in 40 years of working the game. Then, the very next play, Berkenbosch and Neptunus 3B Raily Legito collided during a pick-off; Brandsma ruled interference by Legito, scoring Berkenbosch. While the Pirates led 2-0, they would lose, 5-2.
