Biographical Information

Joe Moffett was one of the earliest players from West Virginia to come to the majors - although he was born before the state was carved out of Virginia during the Civil War. Although he was younger than his brother Sam Moffett, he made his debut a few days before his brother did.

Moffett was on the Toledo Blue Stockings in 1884, where he was a teammate of Fleet Walker and Welday Walker. He was the same age as Welday. While his .201 average was unimpressive the team average was .231 and several players hit under .200.

He was primarily a first baseman, at the time a defensive position, and his fielding percentage was better than that of Chappy Lane, who played the most at first base that season.

The two brothers left baseball to work on a silver strike in Butte, MT. They struck it rich, and while Sam briefly returned to baseball afterwards, they worked in the mining business for the remainder of their active life.
