Biographical Information

Sam Moffett was a two-way player who struggled in both roles. As a pitcher, he lost 80% of his games in 1884, 1887, and 1888, with a lifetime record of 6-29. Although his teams were not successful, his winning percentage was rather lower than the overall percentages.

As a hitter, he hit .169 lifetime, for teams that hit .237 to .247 overall.

As a position player, he appeared 50 times in the outfield and a few times in the infield.

Sam Moffett and Jack Glasscock were both born in Wheeling in 1857, when the city was still in the state of Virginia, before the creation of West Virginia as a separate state. He was the brother of Joe Moffett. The two brothers left baseball to work on a silver strike in Butte, MT. They struck it rich, and while Sam briefly returned to baseball afterwards, they worked in the mining business for the remainder of their active life.

"Pitcher Sam Moffett is reported to have struck 'pay-dirt'. Before he joined the Hoosier team, season before last, he had sunk every dollar he had in a mine near Butte City, Montana. Last year he returned to his mine and last winter struck a lead which yielded him $40,000." - from Sporting Life, April 3, 1889, about Sam Moffett, whose pro ball career seems to have ended in 1888
