Biographical Information[edit]
Chappy Lane was the regular first baseman on both the 1882 Pittsburgh Alleghenys and the 1884 Toledo Blue Stockings. He played 57 games in both years, and scored 26 runs both years, and had around 215 at-bats in both years, but other than that the seasons were not similar. He played more than 2/3 of the 1882 team's games, but was in only around 50% of the 1884 team's games. His batting average was much better in 1884, but his total of 3 homers in 1882 put him among league leaders.
He is the only player on the 1882 Alleghenys whose age is not known.
He also played for Toledo in 1883, when it won the Northwestern League championship. The book Baseball in Toledo has a picture of the team.
He is one of only two major leaguers (through 2007) with the first name Chappy, the other being Chappy Charles. However, there have been a number of players with the nickname "Chappie".
