Biographical Information[edit]
Joe Knotts was up in the majors in September, 1907 with the Boston Doves. He had been playing minor league and independent ball since 1904, and during 1906-1907 had been with the Worcester Busters.
Manager Fred Tenney of the Doves gave several catchers a chance that year, because the regular catcher, Tom Needham, hit .196 and the backup, Sam Brown, hit .192. Joe, unfortunately, didn't get a hit in his 3 games. In 1908, the Doves, under a different manager (Joe Kelley), used Peaches Graham at catcher.
The SABR biography of Al Burris states that Al worked hard to field a highly competitive team at Washington College, and got future major leaguers such as Knotts, Chappy Charles and Bob Unglaub to come to the college.
