Biographical Information[edit]

Joe Green was a player, manager and owner in the Negro Leagues.

Green broke in during 1903 with the Chicago Union Giants. He moved to the Leland Giants in 1905. Statistics for his early years are unavailable as there were rarely games between Green's clubs and other top black teams. In 1909, Joe hit .302, third among midwestern clubs behind Walter Ball and Jap Payne.

In the fall of 1909, the Leland Giants faced their white counterparts, the Chicago Cubs, fresh off a 104-win season. Green made the headlines in game on October 18th; with a 4-1 deficit in the 8th, he stole third base but broke his leg on the play. Pat Moran's throw sailed into the outfield and Green hopped home on one foot. He was thrown out in a close play at the plate and was unable to continue from there, collapsing. His bravery was celebrated in the press.

After Rube Foster had broken from Frank Leland and formed his own team, though retaining the "Leland Giants" name, Green joined Leland's reformed Chicago Giants in 1910 and remained with them through the decade as an outfielder and coach. He became manager of the team in 1921 and then took over the ownership of the club. He was the team owner through the end of the decade.

He died in 1962, shortly following the amputation of a leg. A news story in the Chicago Defender from that time stated that Green "had been troubled with an old injury incurred during his baseball playing days".
