Biographical Information[edit]

Joe Carbone coached college baseball for over 30 years.

Carbone hit .367 in 1969 for Ohio University, playing center field. In 1970, he played second base next to shortstop Mike Schmidt on a team that went to the 1970 College World Series.

The Kansas City Royals signed Carbone after he graduated. He hit .181/.309/.245 in 34 games for the Kingsport Royals and was 0 for 6 with 3 walks for the Waterloo Royals. He was a player/coach in Italy in 1973, going 3 for 7 with a walk, 2 steals, 2 runs and 3 RBI for Edipen while manning shortstop.

Carbone later was an assistant coach at Marshall University and the University of Toledo. From 1977-1988, he was assistant coach at Ohio State University. He also was coach and general manager for a team in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League during the summers. The GLSCL later named its Coach of the Year Award after Carbone.

Joe became head coach at his alma mater in 1989. After 20 seasons in that role, he was 585-496-2, setting a school record for wins in any sport. He was second in Mid-American Conference history in wins through 2009 behind Fred Decker. He guided the team to a school-record 43 victories in 1997. He retired at the end of the 2012 season.

Carbone has been named Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year in 1991 and 1997. He conducted baseball clinics in Italy in 1992 and coached for Team USA in the 1999 Pan American Games, when they qualified for the 2000 Olympics.
