Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Joe Boyle was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 5th and final round of the truncated 2020 amateur draft, out of the University of Notre Dame. On July 31, 2023, he was traded to the Oakland Athletics in return for reliever Sam Moll. He made his major league debut with the A's on September 17th, starting at home against the San Diego Padres. He did well, allowing only one hit and two walks in three scoreless innings while striking out four opponents, but his successor on the mound, Ken Waldichuk, was rocked for 6 runs in 4 innings and was charged with Oakland's 10-1 loss. He went 2-0, 1.69 in his 3 starts that first season.
In 2024, he pitched 13 times for Oakland, including 10 starts, but logged only 47 2/3 innings, ending up with a record of 3-6, 6.42. He started the year with Oakland, spending April in the starting rotation, then was sent down to the minors after a tough outing on May 5th when he gave up 4 runs in 1 inning in a 12-3 loss to the Miami Marlins. He did not return until mid-August and had his best start of the year on August 19th, when he pitched 6 scoreless innings in a 3-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. He went back to the minors at the end of the month, and finished his season with a couple of scoreless relief appearances in late September. On December 14th, he was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays along with two minor leaguers, Will Simpson and Jacob Watters, and the A's Competitive Balance Round A pick in the 2025 amateur draft, in return for Ps Jeffrey Springs and Jacob Lopez.
