Biographical Information[edit]

First baseman Will Simpson was first drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 18th round of the 2019 amateur draft coming out of high school, then after going to the University of Washington for four years, including one that was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic, he was drafted again, this time by the Oakland Athletics in the 15th round of the 2023 amateur draft. He hit .335 with 18 homers and 58 RBIs in 52 games in his final season with the Huskies.

He started his pro career in 2023 with the ACL Athletics before earning a quick promotion to the Stockton Ports of the California League. His combined batting line in 36 games was .319/.367/.544. In 2024, he spent most of the season in High A with the Lansing Lugnuts of the Midwest League before a late-year promotion to the AA Midland RockHounds. Once again, his numbers were very good, with a slash line of .282/.378/.482 in 127 games, with 31 doubles, 18 homers and 90 RBIs. He was named a postseason All-Star in the Midwest League. On December 14th, he was one of three young players traded to the Tampa Bay Rays in returns for Ps Jeffrey Springs and Jacob Lopez, the others being Joe Boyle and Jacob Watters. The A's also gave up a Competitive Balance Round A pick in the 2024 amateur draft in the trade.
