Biographical Information[edit]

Shortstop Joe Berger played minor league baseball from 1907 to 1928, swatting 2,659 hits, scoring 1,541 runs, and stealing 294 bases in 2,608 games.

From a bio published in a Rock Island newspaper in 1907: "This speedy and hard hitting lad who is breaking into fast company this year, was born in St. Louis, Mo., Dec 22. 1888. He started his baseball career in 1903, playing independent ball in and around St. Louis. In the season of 1905, when the St. Louis Empires won every game played. Joe was with them at third sack, and it was while with this team that his fast work came before the eyes of the critics. Until his arrival with the Islanders, which was at the beginning of this season, he always played third, but after he had been given a short work out here, Manager Tighe noted the way he handled the sphere, gave him a try at short and he made good from the start. It is expected that the injury that he met with yesterday will not keep him out of the game more than two or three davs." See [1].
