Biographical Information[edit]

Jimmy Shields pitched briefly in the Negro Leagues. In 1928, he was 2-2 with a 1.51 ERA (341 ERA+) for the Atlantic City Bacharach Giants of the Eastern Colored League (he was at 6-3, 2.61 against all opponents, surprisingly posting a better ERA in league play). He fell to 3-5 with two saves and a 10.69 ERA (50 ERA+) for a big drop-off in 1929 league play, with a 9.41 ERA against all competition. He did finish second in the American Negro League in saves (of course, no one knew it as saves were not invented until after he died and not tabulated for the league until the 21st Century), one behind Bob McClure.
