Biographical Information[edit]

Jimmy Mayer is the son of scout Bob Mayer.

Mayer hit .380 in high school and also was a star basketball player. He was picked in the 40th round of the 2002 amateur draft by the Cleveland Indians. Jimmy hit .200 in 9 games as a backup shortstop for the 2003 Pitt Panthers. As a sophomore, Mayer hit .341 and slugged .500 in 30 games as a backup infielder. During his junior year, the Johnstown native became the starting shortstop and hit .317/.400/.385 while forming a solid middle infield duo with Jim Negrych. In 2006, the senior batted .357/.426/.496, second on the club in average behind Negrych. He stole 15 bases in 20 tries and scored 52 runs in 51 games.

Mayer was picked by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 30th round of the 2006 amateur draft. He debuted as a pro with the Hudson Valley Renegades as a backup 3B, hitting .290/.371/.355 in 9 games. In 2007, he batted .287/.337/.351 in 35 games as a utility man for Hudson Valley; he played all 3 outfield spots and every infield spot except first base; he also was used at DH. In 2008, Jimmy was 1 for 23 with 3 walks as a backup infielder for the Columbus Catfish, then was released.
