Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher Jimmy Gonzalez was a supplemental 1st round pick in the 1991 Amateur Draft by the Houston Astros. Gonzalez played in the Astros system from 1991-1997 where he never rose above AA. He made it to AAA each of the next two seasons in the San Diego Padres organization. The final four years of his career in affiliated baseball was spent with the New York Mets (2000, 2002, 2004) and Montreal Expos (2001). In his thirteen minor league seasons, Gonzalez hit .230/.305/.359 while appearing in 922 games. Despite playing in AAA for three seasons, he never got the call to the major leagues. Gonzalez also played for the Atlantic City Surf of the independent Atlantic League in 2003.

Almost a decade after completing his playing career, Gonzalez reappeared in professional baseball as a coach and manager. He was a coach for the AZL Cubs in 2013 and then managed the club in 2014. In 2015 the Chicago Cubs promoted Gonzalez to manage the South Bend Cubs where he stayed through the 2018 season. Following the 2018 season, Gonzalez served as the hitting coach for the Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League. During his stint with South Bend, he won the 2016 Midwest League Manager of the Year award for his efforts. The Cubs promoted Gonzalez again in 2019 to manage the Tennessee Smokies. In 2020 he was slated to manage the AZL Cubs 2 prior to COVID-19 forcing the cancellation of the minor league season. This was Gonzalez's final season working in the Cubs organization.

The Boston Red Sox hired Gonzalez in 2021 to coach the FCL Red Sox. He returned to the team in 2022 as co-manager.
