Biographical Information[edit]

Scout Jim Howard worked for the Baltimore Orioles from 1988 to 2019; he worked in the California Angels system in 1987. He signed, among others, Erik Bedard, Damon Buford, Paul Chmiel, Pat Egan, Jim Hoey, Jim Johnson, Val Majewski, John Parrish, Keith Reed and Joel Stephens. He won the A.B. "Turk" Karam Award in 2006. He was elected to the Professional Baseball Scouts Hall of Fame in 2011.

Prior to his scouting career, Howard played professionally from 1984 to 1987. Originally drafted by the Orioles in the 6th round of the 1983 amateur draft, a few picks after outfielder Kevin Ward, he opted not to sign. He did sign after being taken by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 19th round of the 1984 amateur draft, a few slots after infielder Stu Cole. Though he began his career with a .294/.388/.446 slash line his first pro season, he soon fell off and hit just .240/.327/.338 in 192 games overall.
