Biographical Information

Outfielder Joel Stephens was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the ninth round of the 1995 amateur draft and played three years in their organization. Following the 1997 season, he was diagnosed with colon cancer. After surgery and treatment, he appeared headed towards recovery and began working out with the Frederick Keys the next summer. However, his health again began to decline, and he died that September at age 22.
