Biographical Information[edit]

Jim Dunegan tied for the league lead in the 1968 Midwest League with 25 doubles and 14 outfield assists with the Quincy Cubs. He was mainly an outfielder from 1967 to 1969, although he pitched a few games each of those seasons.

Converted to pitching full time with the AA San Antonio Missions of the Texas League in 1970, he was pitching in the major leagues for the Chicago Cubs by the end of May after having gone 3-2, 2.68 in 8 starts. His major league debut came as pinch-runner however, on May 28th, as his first pitching appearance was not until May 31st when he as used in both ends of a doubleheader against the San Diego Padres. He pitched a few more times in June, then returned to the minor leagues, this time in AAA with the Tacoma Cubs. He was 5-7, 5.49, for Tacoma but came back to Chicago in September for a few more games. Overall, he made seven appearances as a pitcher and was used as a pinch-runner four times (in one game, he did both). He ended up 0-2 with a 4.73 ERA for his major league career, but issued 12 walks in 13 1/3 innings while striking out only 3 batters.

He pitched two more seasons in the minors. He went 6-7, 4.28, in 27 games between San Antonio and Tacoma in 1971, then was 0-1, 7.47 splitting the 1972 season between the Wichita Aeros of the American Association and Midland Cubs of the Texas League. He retired after that.
