Biographical Information

Jim Devlin pitched four seasons in the majors.

Devlin was born in Lansingburgh, NY, which is now part of Troy, NY, a hotbed of early baseball. He played for the minor-league Syracuse Stars in 1886 and also for the 1886 New York Giants, appearing in just one game. The main pitchers for the Giants that year were Tim Keefe and Mickey Welch.

He popped up with the Philadelphia Quakers for two games in 1887, but spent most of the season with Lynn and Ashland.

The next year, 1888, he pitched for the pennant-winning St. Louis Browns, going 6-5. Interestingly, he was the oldest regular pitcher on the team, with the other starters either 19 or 20 years old.

With the 1889 Browns he was 5-3 with a 2.40 ERA. The team ERA was 3.00 and Devlin had one of the best ERA's on the staff. His last game in the majors was in June, and he spent time in the minors that season with Minneapolis and St. Joseph.

After his major league days he continued to play in the minors. In 1897 he played briefly in Canada.

He is not to be confused with two other major leaguers named Jim Devlin.
