Team History

16 years after the last game by the Jersey City Jerseys, the Jersey City Indians brought professional baseball back to Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, NJ in 1977. The Cleveland Indians farm team in the Eastern League was a horrible affair that year; managed by John Orsino, they were last by a wide margin with a 40-97 record. Jersey City drew 60,024 fans, fourth in the 8-team EL. With the worst offense and pitching/defense, they were outscored 823 runs to 456 and had no All-Stars. Tom Brennan (3-1, 2.57 in 4 starts) and Jim Clancy (5-13, 4.88) would go on to fairly effective big-league careers, while Mike Darr Sr. (6-13, 1 Sv, 6.14) led the EL in runs allowed (116), earned runs allowed (90) and walks (114 in 132 innings). 2B Riccardo Bellini hit .300/~.355/.360 and finished sixth in the EL in batting average. Switching affiliations the next year, the club became the Jersey City A's.
