Biographical Information[edit]
Jeremy Haynes spent six seasons in the minors.
He was taken by the Boston Red Sox in the 17th round of the 2004 amateur draft (one pick before Jerry Blevins) but did not sign. He was then drafted by the Los Angeles Angels as a draft-and-follow pick in the 37th round of the 2005 amateur draft. After another year of junior college he was signed by scout Tom Kotchman for $100,000 and made his pro debut in 2006. He went 3-1 with a 2.76 ERA that summer for the Orem Owlz, striking out 65 in 58 2/3 innings but also walking 41. He was 6th in the Pioneer League in whiffs but second in walks (5 behind leader Jason Neighborgall).
With the 2007 Cedar Rapids Kernels, Haynes showed sharper control (41 walks again, but in 94 innings) while his strikeout rate fell as well (75 K). He had a 5-6, 3.06 record, with a better ERA than rotation-mates and future major leaguers Trevor Bell and David Herndon. He tied for sixth in the Midwest League with 14 wild pitches. He saw limited action in 2008, with more wildness and fewer whiffs: 2-1, 2.67 for Cedar Rapids and 1-2, 10.03 for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. He only struck out 21 in 50 1/3 innings while walking 43, a horrendous BB/K ratio, while tossing 10 more wild pitches.
As a reliever for the '09 Quakes, the right-hander went 0-5 with a 4.36 ERA. He struck out 67 in 66 innings and walked 51, while throwing 17 wild pitches. He tied three others for second in the California League in wild pitches, though they were all 11 behind leader Leandro Cespedes. Surprisingly for his walk and wild pitch totals, he only hit two batters. Haynes split 2010 between Rancho Cucamonga (1-0, Sv, 2.45 in 11 G) and the Arkansas Travelers (3-0, 6.14, 53 BB in 48 1/3 IP). He began 2011 with the Inland Empire 66ers but gave up 16 runs (all earned) on 17 walks and 20 hits in 15 1/3 innings, going 1-2. Finally let go by the Angels, he signed with the Atlanta Braves but continued his woes with the Lynchburg Hillcats (2-1, 6.14, 33 BB in 36 2/3 IP).
Overall, Haynes had gone 18-18 with two saves and a 4.53 ERA in 156 games (47 starts) in the minors. He struck out 334 in 387 2/3 innings while walking 287 and throwing 66 wild pitches.
