Biographical Information[edit]
Picked in the 26th round of the 1976 amateur draft by the San Francisco Giants, Jeff Stember began his professional career with the 1977 Great Falls Giants, going 7-3 with a 3.72 ERA. He was third in the Pioneer League in ERA and tied for third in victories. The right-hander had a rough year with the 1978 Cedar Rapids Giants, managing just a 5-14, 1 save, 5.59 campaign. He tied for the league lead in losses, earned runs allowed (82) and walks allowed (97 in 132 IP) and hit the most batters (9).
Stember was 3-3, 4.86 for Cedar Rapids in 1979 and 4-2, 5.11 for the Fresno Giants. In 1980, Jeff had his big year. The 22-year-old went 5-5, 2.65 for the Shreveport Captains. His 4 shutouts tied for second in the Texas League and his ERA would have been second had he qualified in innings, but he was called up to the Phoenix Giants, where he was 5-2 with a 3.44 ERA. He made his only major league appearance on August 5th, allowing a home run to Terry Puhl in 3 innings of work.
In 1981, Jeff was back in Phoenix and slipped to 7-9, 6.44, then he was 2-3, 7.43 the next year to finish his career.
